REACT study

Recording and observing the activities of the arms and hands during the rehabilitation of people with paraplegia

This study is a collaborative project between the Centre for Paraplegia at the Balgrist University Clinic in Zurich, the Swiss Paraplegic Centre in Nottwil and the REHAB Basel.

The aim of this project is to examine how physical activity in people with spinal cord injuries changes over the course of initial rehabilitation, with the help of a meter developed by the ETH Zurich. The strength and agility of the arms and hands is at the forefront.

Using the so-called “REACT sensors”, measurement are taken a total of five times, each time over three days (day and night), during the first year of rehabilitation. For this purpose, test subjects wear sensors like wristwatches on both wrists and a belt around the ribcage. Additionally, we examine the strength and agility of the arms and fill out a pain assessment survey. The results will be evaluated by the research department at the Centre for Paraplegia at the Balgrist University Clinic.
